Tips for selecting the best cut of flat iron steak
Understand the cut: The flat iron steak comes from the shoulder of the animal and is one of the most tender cuts of steak. It is full of flavor, but can be more expensive than some other cuts.
- Look for marbling: Marbled fat is key for a flavorful flat iron steak, as it helps to keep the meat moist and tender during cooking. Look for steaks with visible fat marbling throughout the cut.
- Choose the right size: Flat iron steaks are typically sold in two sizes; 8 ounces and 12 ounces. Consider the number of people you’re cooking for when selecting the size.
- Avoid pre-marinated steaks: Pre-marinated steaks are often pumped with solutions that can affect the flavor and texture of the meat. If you want to marinate the steak, choose an un-marinated cut instead.
- Opt for organic: Organic flat iron steaks not only taste better, but are also healthier for you. Organic cuts are free of artificial hormones and antibiotics, so they are a healthier choice.
- Check the expiration date: Make sure the steak you’re buying has an expiration date that is at least a few days away. This will ensure that the steak you’re buying is fresh and won’t go bad before you’re able to cook it.
