How to Make Simple Syrup
I’m not a huge fan of sweets, but I do love a good simple syrup. This recipe is super easy to follow and only requires a few ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.

Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
Instructions
- In a saucepan over medium heat, stir together the water and sugar.
- Bring to a boil, then adjust the heat to a simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the sugar is dissolved.
- Let the simple syrup cool completely off the heat before pouring into a glass jar or bottle.
- Refrigerate until needed; it will last for about 1 month in the fridge or almost indefinitely in the freezer.
What is simple syrup made of and how do you make it?
Simple syrup is a key ingredient in many cocktails and other drinks. It’s made by dissolving sugar in water, and the ratio of sugar to water can be 1:1 or 2:1, depending on whether you want a basic or rich syrup. To make simple syrup, just combine sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.
What are the different types of simple syrup?
When it comes to mixing up delicious cocktails, simple syrup is an essential ingredient. But did you know that there are actually several different types of simple syrup, each with its own unique flavor profile? Here’s a quick guide to the different types of simple syrup and which drinks they pair best with.
Cane syrup: Cane syrup has a deep, molasses-like flavor that pairs well with dark spirits like rum and whiskey. Try using it in an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan.
Demerara syrup: Demerara sugar is a type of raw sugar made from cane sugar crystals. It has a rich, caramel-like flavor that goes well with bourbon and rye whiskey. Use it in any cocktail that calls for simple syrup or brown sugar.
Vietnamese palm sugar syrup: This type of simple syrup is made from Vietnamese palm sugar, which has a deep amber color and complex flavor profile. It’s perfect for use in tiki drinks like Mai Tais and Zombies.
Honey syrup: As you might guess from the name, honey syrup is simply honey dissolved in water. It has a sweet floral flavor that works well in cocktails featuring gin or vodka. Try using it to make a Bee’s Knees or a Gimlet.
Agave Syrup: Agave Syrup is made from the juice of the agave plant and has a light sweetness similar to honey but without the floral notes. Because it dissolves easily and doesn’t have an overpowering taste ,it’s become popular as not just a drink mixer but also as something to sweeten coffee iced tea etc.
How long does simple syrup last?
Simple syrup is a versatile ingredient used in many cocktails and other drinks. But how long does it last?
If you make simple syrup with a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water, it will last for about a month when stored in the refrigerator. Rich simple syrup, made from a 2:1 ratio of sugar to water, will last for about six months before becoming cloudy.
What can i use instead of simple syrup?
If you’re out of simple syrup or just looking for a different sweetness option, there are a few potential substitutes you can use. Maple syrup, agave nectar, and honey are all possible replacements for simple syrup in cocktails and other drinks. Each of these options has its own unique flavor that can change the taste of your drink, so be sure to experiment to find the perfect combination for you.
